2006 Fall Make Up Trends HowTo Make Them Age Wearable
The BIG look is the dark sooty eye. This slightly Goth look is great on anyone with young, dewy skin. Put it on someone twenty or thirty years older and you have a dead ringer for Gloria Swanson in “Sunset Boulevard”. Too scary. You can have that sexy vamp look – just be prudent about it. The first step is too avoid all eyeliner. Odd but true.
Prime the lids with a neutral base color to make sure your darker shadow doesn’t look too Goth. Then pick either a navy, eggplant or mink brown.(Ulta cosmetics has some great dark eye shadows that do this job) Using a light hand and cotton ball apply the shadow over the lid and then, using a brush , apply it a bit more intensely on the lid. Now comes the make or break part. Personally I think using eye pencils past the age of forty is makes a woman look too hooker-ish. You can achieve the same effect using a good eyeliner brush and a dark shadow. If you want a really sultry glam look line eyes with a great smoky grep shadow, Graphite by Ulta. This is a shimmery , sooty ash grey that tops off any evening or party look. If you want a dash of color , try Ulta’s Twilight, a deep indigo blue lining upper and lower lids. Finish this look with two to three coats of mascara (I like Cover Girl’s Lash Exact for this. They give my lashes that lush falsie look)
The runways have been featuring this with pale, almost dead looking skin. Don’t try this at home! You should have a little glow to your face – not a lot (or you’ll look like a Vegas show girl),You can get a bit of color with a light dusting form any of Benefit’s blushes such as dandelion or Georgia which impart a faint flush. Also the smoky eye demands a pale mouth, but not so pale that it disappears altogether. Be prudent with the gloss too. You don’t want to look like you’ve just been named The Pork Chop Eating Queen. A neutral gloss such as e.l.f.’s Goddess a golden peach that give lip a hint of naked glamor is good for balancing dark eyes. Another good shade is Revlon’s Moisturous lipstick in Naked Splash. This goes on like a lipstick but the result is a glossy color that looks slightly wet. You can also just go with a clear gloss such as e.l.f’s Angel which looks frosty white in the tube but goes on colorless. Cover Girl’s Lipsticks Li p Gloss are also great especially in Demure or Cutie.
Another smoky eye rule – don’t wear this during the day! It looks too much for office wear. You can amp it up after work but that’s it!
Another big trend this season are red lips. In all honesty, the only over forty chick who can pull this look off is Project Runway’s classic designer 43 year old Laura Bennett (and she’s a redhead no less, You think her mouth and hair would clash but they surprisingly don’t) Again that inexpensive darling, e.l..f. has some great reds. I love their winy Super Glossy Lip Gloss Mauve Luxe .It’;s got that rich color without that heavily painted look. Another one of their reds Cabernet, from their Shielding Gloss SPF line delivers the right amount of scarlet without looking too dramatic. Another good choice is the Revlon Moisturous Color which has a good, solid variety of reds.If you’re still skittish about red lips then opt for Target cosmetic expert Sonia Kashuk’s tinted balms. She has a bright red that goes for impact without being too forceful.
Remember that red lips call for a pale face but not too pale. Start with a good foundation that matches your skin tone (the best for this is L’Oreal’s True Match) followed by a light dusting of a pale rosy or peach blush (again benefit’s blush colors work well here). As for eyes, stick with neutrals like Revlon’s’ All Day Color in Hazelnut for day or Prestige’s C-176 Oasis for evening. You can line eyes with a very thin line of Ulta’s Mink or Graphite eye shadow but go easy with this. Follow with two coats of mascara.
Don’t be afraid of this fall’s make up trends no matter what age. As with any aspect of fashion, tailor it to how it looks on you and what works with your lifestyle. Make it work to your individual style!
