4 Easy Steps to Repair a Large Exterior Stucco Hole

Stucco exterior walls can be very appealing. They can give an old world look, or the look of utter sophistication. However, any damage to the stucco can cause severe moisture damage in the house. Step 1: Removal

Before repairing your exterior stucco wall, you must remove the damaged pieces. Use a chisel and a hammer to knock out all the loose stucco. Next, blow all the excess dust out of the hole. Underneath, there should be a layer of wire mesh. If the wire mesh is damaged in any way, simply staple new mesh right over top of it. Then make sure the whole area is completely clean by spraying it with fresh water.

Step 2: 1st Stucco Layer

After your area is clean it is time to apply your first layer of stucco. This layer should be applied with a mason’s towel. Make sure some of the material squishes through the wire mesh. It should also come about Ã?¼ inch from the surface of the old stucco. Once this becomes firm, use a nail to scratch it. Then let the material cure for at least 2 days.

Step 3: 2nd Stucco Layer

After you have waited 2 days for curing, dampen the first coat of stucco. Next, apply the next layer leaving 1/8 inch from the surface. You should once again, smooth this layer of stucco and let it cure for at least 2 days.

Step 4: Finishing Coat

This final step is the finishing step. This is when you apply the color coat stucco over the second layer. You must first moisten the 2nd layer before applying the color coat with a metal float. Make sure it is flush with the old stucco and texture it to match the rest of the house. Cover the area with plastic and let it cure for at least 4 days.
