Top 10 Underwater Volcanoes in the World

Existing on this earth, away from our eyes, there are many underwater mysteries that are still unveiled. One of these mysteries is the existence of underwater volcanoes. Some of these underwater volcanoes are active while others are inactive. Although these volcanoes are situated under the sea, they can still cause massive destruction if they erupt. Besides causing high intensity earthquakes, these volcanoes have the potential to push large catastrophic tidal waves towards coastal areas.

Based on the height, there are 10 underwater volcanoes that are particularly prominent.

    South Pacific, Vailulu’u

    This submarine volcano is located in the Samoa Islands. Vaululu'u has a height of about 4200 meters from the sea bed and has a summit depth of 590 m as it extends more than 33 km at its base.

    Kawio Barat

    This cone like volcano has been discovered in 2010 and is situated in the North Pacific ocean on the Sangihe Arc near Indonesia. It has a height of about 3800 meters on the sea bed.

    Loihi Volcano

    This volcano lies in the Pacific Ocean near the southeast of Hawaii. Its height is 3000 meters above the ocean bed with a summit depth of 975 meters. This volcano is also called the youngest volcano and is actually a mountain in the ocean. It first erupted in 1996.

    Mt. Marsili, Europe

    This Italian volcano is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea and is the largest one in Europe. The height of this volcano is 3000m and is 43 miles long with a width of 19 miles. It has been researched for a long time and now the scientists are of the view that this volcano can erupt at anytime. The walls of this volcano are very fragile and it can produce large tides in the sea which can go all the way to Italy.

    Barren Island, Andaman Sea

    This active underwater volcano is located in the Andaman Sea. The height is 2240 m on the sea bed. In 1787, this volcano erupted for the first time and has erupted six times since then.

    Kick 'em Jenny, Grenada

    This volcano is located in the Caribbean Sea towards the north of Grenada. It has a height of 1300 m and a summit depth of -180 m (180 meters under the sea surface). This volcano first erupted in 1939 and in 2001. Since this volcano is active, it is expected to erupt again in the future.

    Brothers Volcano, New Zealand

    Located in New Zealand, this dormant Volcano is a part of Karmadec Arc. This circular volcano has a diameter of 7–9 km and has a height of 900 m on the sea bed. It's depth is 1350 meters.

    Located in Aleutian Islands in Alaska, this volcano has a height of 580 meters. Although it has been declared dormant but still scientists believe that it can erupt anytime as it is a very unpredictable volcano.

    Kolumbo Volcano

    This underwater volcano is located in the Aegan Sea in the North Eastern part of Cape Kolumbo in Greece. Its height is of about 300 m on the sea bed. This oval shaped volcano goes 8km along its own axis. Although this volcano is active but it has been silent for a long time.
