1
Consider booking a direct flight if it possible. When there will be fewer layovers, the chances of delayed flights and lost luggage in transit will automatically decrease. As a result, your time at the airport will also decrease to a great extent.

2
Regardless of how much you dread the baggage carousel or fear losing your luggage, checking your bags will alleviate some airport stress. With strict security it is difficult to bring all your travel items on the plane anyway. Save yourself the stress of hoping your expensive shampoo and lotions aren't confiscated.

Prepare yourself for your travelling experience. Expect flying to be, well, flying and then you will be pleasantly surprised if all goes smoothly. Leave for the airport early, wear comfortable shoes and clothes, bring lots of reading material and earplugs. Music etc will will keep you occupied and make the whole process as enjoyable as possible.

Pack your carry-on for long layovers and delays. Flying is a hit-or-miss on a normal day; anything can happen when the airport is packed to capacity around the holidays. You should plan on a lot of downtime. Also, pack your toothbrush, travel-size lotion and face-wash. If you get stuck somewhere for a long time it will give you a chance to freshen up.

Be nice to everyone and they will be nice to you. It is not only going to be a stressful day for you, but also for the airport employees, the other travellers and the flight crew. Make the whole experience pleasant for everyone (including yourself) with a smile.
