Making jams and jellies at home is always a great idea because this not only save you a lot of money, but also keeps you and your family safe from all the harmful chemicals and preservatives that are included in these products.
Ingredients
  • Things Required for Jam -
  • Fruit (Fresh or Frozen)
  • Pectin
  • Sugar
  • Things Required for Jelly -
  • Apple cider – 2 Cups
  • Sugar – 3 ½ cups
  • Fresh thyme leaves - 2 teaspoons
  • Liquid fruit pectin - 1 pouch (3 ounces)
Instructions
  1. Most people choose to use a single fruit when making jam such as strawberry, blueberry or raspberry but you can always mix these different types together to make a jam cocktail.
  2. Whichever fruit you want to use, have it available either fresh or frozen, and clean it thoroughly. Be sure to remove all the stems and leafs from whichever fruit you have chosen.
  3. Now comes the time to crush the fruit into small chunks in order for it to be incorporated into the homemade jam.
  4. Some people like to have bigger chunks of the fruit in their jam, but for the best results, it is recommended to crush them into a puree form, using a blender or even a potato masher.
  5. On the pectin package, you will be able to find the recommended proportion to be used with the amount of sugar.
  6. Some people do not like to include sugar, especially those suffering from diabetes.
  7. Mix your fruit and the pectin while bringing it to a full boil on the stove top.
  8. Add sugar according to your taste and let it boil for a couple of minutes, after which you should shut the heat off and let the mixture cool.
  9. Pour the mixture into the glass jars and boil the jars for at least 10 minutes with the mixture to create a natural seal.
  10. You have successfully made your own homemade jam.
  11. For making homemade jelly, combine the ingredients in the microwave bowl and mix well.
  12. Now turn the microwave oven to full power and cook for nearly 10 minutes.
  13. Stir the mixture vigorously and allow it in the microwave for 5 more minutes.
  14. Now add pectin, and further heat it in the microwave for 1-1/2 minutes.
  15. Remove the froth which develops at the top of the mixture and insert it into sterilized jars.
  16. Glass jars work best when it comes to making and storing homemade jams and jellies but it is important to clean them thoroughly.
  17. Remember to boil the jars and lids to remove all germs.
  18. Dry them off either in your dishwasher or by using a clean and dry cloth.
