Instructions

  • 1

Add ingredients to the large pan

First of all, add all the ingredients to a large pan; this includes the lemon juice and rind, the barley and the sugar. When adding the respective ingredients to the pan, make sure you have taken the right quantities, as anything less or more than the advised amount will alter the taste of the drink.

  • 2

Add boiling water to the pan

After placing the ingredients in the pan, add 1 gallon of boiling water to the pan and stir the ingredients in the water carefully. Cover the pan so that the ingredients combine nicely with the water. Leave the pan to cool down for some time.

  • 3

    Strain the ingredients

Once the water has cooled down a bit, strain all the liquid from the pan into a jug. Make sure there are no seeds in the jug after you have strained the mixture. You can also use a muslin cloth to strain the ingredients.

  • 4

    Refrigerate the mixture

Place the jug in the refrigerator so that the mixture cools down further. The drink will taste best when it is chilled so make sure you leave the jug in the refrigerator for a considerable period of time.

  • 5

    Serve the drink

Once you feel that the liquid has cooled enough, pour it into six glasses equally. Make sure the glasses are not filled to the top as you also have to add ice cubes to each glass. You can add mint leaves to each glass for added taste. Add ice cubes and serve instantly, as the taste is best when the drink is chilled.
