Difference between Nvidia Tegra3 and Ti Omap4460
NVIDIA Tegra3 and TI OMAP4460 are two Multi Processor System-on-Chips (MPSoCs) which are being widely used in consumer electronics these days. Although both NVIDIA Tegra3 and TI OMAP4460 were released at the end of 2011 and both use CPUs based on ARM’s (Advanced RICS – Reduced Instruction Set Computer – Machine, developed by ARM Holdings), there are a few differences between the two.
The first device that made use of NVIDIA Tegra3 as a Multi Processor System-on-Chip was named Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime. On the other hand, Archos 80 G9 was the first electronic device which made use of TI OMAP4460 as an MPSoC.
NVIDIA Tegra3 and TI OMAP4460 also differ from each other in terms of their CPU’s Clock Speed. The former uses three different CPU clock speeds i.e. 1.4 GHz, 1.3 GHz and 500 MHz; On the other hand, TI OMAP 4460 MPSoC uses CPUs ranging from 1.2GHz to 1.5GHz in terms of CPU clock speed.
GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) Clock Speed is another difference between NVIDIA Tegra3 and TI OMAP4460. The GPU’s clock speed in NVIDIA Tegra3 is 520MHz whereas for TI OMAP 4460 Multi Processor System-on-Chip, the GPU’s clock speed is 384MHz.
Moreover, Tegra 3 Series uses TSMC’s 40nm CPU/GPU Technology. On the other hand, the CPU/GPU Technology used in TI OMAP4460 is TSMC’s 45nm. Another technical difference between NVIDIA Tegra3 and TI OMAP4460 is the amount of minimum virtual memory necessary for smooth operations. Electronic devices based on NVIDIA Tegra3 can support up to 2GB DDR2 RAM. The same is not true for electronic devices which use TI OMAP4460 because in this case, virtual memory required is only 1GB DDR2 RAM.
Apart from the above mentioned technical differences, NVIDIA Tegra3 and TI OMAP4460 MPSoCs differ from each other in terms of worldwide popularity and usage trends. NVIDIA has released a number of updates in recent years. This makes Tegra3 MPSoCs more widely used as compared to TI OMAP 4460 MPSoCs.
