The first and the most important factor is the location of the computer which will be used by the children, it is important that you place the computer from where you can easily monitor the activities of your child with the screen clearly visible. This is the easiest way to keep your child safe.

  • 2

Install parent control on the computer which will give you the power to block offensive web addresses, preventing your child from accessing pornographic material.

  • 3

Always check your browser’s history after your child uses the internet. This will help you see which websites were visited by the child. If you see a suspicious address check it yourself and see if your suspensions are correct.

  • 4

Talk to your child about the dangerous on the internet. Let your children know that while you love them and trust them, you are still the one making the rules in the house.

Inform the children that they should never meet someone in person who they have just connected with on the internet as there are many sex predators capable of causing harm.

  • 5

Limiting the use of the internet is another way to keep your children safe. If they remain logged on throughout the day it will be harder to protect them.

  • 6

Ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP) if there is ever any suspicious activity from you connection.

  • 7

Do not encourage your children to use social networking websites, especially chat rooms as these are not safe. Also instruct your child never to give out personal information on the internet to anyone.

  • 8

If your child has made a friend online, talk to him or her; get to know him/her and once you are convinced, only then allow your child to proceed with the friendship.
