How to Make a Bamboo Teepee Trellis

The facts that bamboo is lightweight, resilient and renewable makes it an ideal material for making teepee trellises; a garden structure used for supporting peas, pole beans and sweet peas. Teepee trellises work best in situations where space is limited and annual vines need to be grown. Making a bamboo teepee trellis is a fairly easy task and does not require the use of any specialised tools. Furthermore, the items required for making a bamboo teepee trellis are fairly inexpensive.

Things Required:

– 8 bamboo poles, 10 feet in length
– 14-inch plastic zip tie
– Trowel
– Tape measure
– Step tool (if required)

Instructions

  • 1

Draw a circle, four feet in diameter with a trowel. The circle will delineate the base of the bamboo teepee trellis you plan on making. Make sure you get the diameter of the circle correct because all corresponding measurements will be dependent on it. Use a tape measure if you have to.

  • 2

In order to get a feel of how far apart from each other you would need to install the bamboo poles, lay out all 8, 10-foot bamboo poles in even increments on the perimetre of the circle you drew in the previous step.

Pick up one pole at a time and drive it 18 to 24 inches into the ground. This may take some effort, especially if you are making the bamboo teepee trellis on firm ground.

  • 3

Gather all 8 poles at one point at the top. Use a 14-inch plastic zip tie to hold the bamboo poles together. Secure the poles about 6 inches from the top end of the pole. Make sure you clip off the zip tie’s the tail. If you are not tall enough, you may have to ask another person to help you. If that is not possible, consider using a step tool.

  • 4

Create a mound of planting soil at the base of each of the 8 bamboo poles and plant the desired seeds in each soil mound. Vines will eventually start growing up the bamboo poles. Consider planting lettuce, arugula, or spinach in order to effectively utilise space in the centre of the teepee trellis.
