How to Sew a Footbag

The first known use of a footbag as a playing object can be dated back to a 1955 film, To Catch a Thief. Ever since, use of footbags has become increasingly common in different parts of the world. If purchasing a footbag does not fit into your budget for some reason, consider making one at home. Remember that you may have to try a few times before you can sew a perfect footbag.

Things Required:

– Pattern
– Scissors
– Fabric (cotton/leather, etc.)
– Fill (sand, bead or rice)
– Needle and thread
– Pen or marker
– Funnel or piece of paper
– Sand

Instructions

  • 1

Determine the number of constituent panels you intend to use for sewing the footbag. Consider using 4 panels or 8 panels to make the task easier. However, this is not a binding rule and you can use any number of panels. Trace out the determined number of footbag panels using a pen and pattern.

Start sewing the footbag fabric pieces together with a needle and a thread. The fabric side you want to be on the outside of the finished product will need to be towards the inside during this step. Moreover, leave a small space along fabric piece edges.

  • 3

You will need enough unstitched fabric to turn the footbag inside out. To accomplish this, be sure to leave 3 to 1 inch piece of fabric unstitched on each footbag panel. When you have successfully turned the bag inside out, all the seams that you created in the previous step will be concealed.

  • 4

Fill the footbag with sand, beads, rice or any other material of your choice. Use a funnel to help you fill the sandbag. If you do not have a funnel, roll a piece of paper in the shape of a funnel and use it instead. Even though you can use any appropriate material to fill the footbag, sand is probably the easiest to work with.

You will now have to stitch the fabric sections you left unstitched previously. Using a pinch sew technique, pinch a piece of fabric and feed the needle twice through the same piece of fabric and then move on to the other panel. Continue until the hole you left earlier is completely closed.

Be sure to secure the final seam by tying it off with a knot. You may not be able to get this step right initially. However, with enough practice, you will easily be able to finish off the task of sewing a footbag at home.
