    Know the signs

    You are required to know the signs of a heart attack. It mainly involves tightness in the chest, shortness of breath and intense pain radiating out from the chest. Besides these initial warning signs, some major symptoms include rapid heartbeat, pain in the upper abdomen for several minutes, pain in the arms, jaw, neck or teeth, profuse sweating, nausea, pressure or pain in the chest and dizziness or fainting.

    Be prepared

    In case you have heart-related conditions or problems and you have been prescribed nitrates, carry them with you all the time. If you use an oxygen tank, you need to carry it as well.

    It is advisable for heart patients to carry a card on which their particular medical condition is detailed. By this you increase the chance of being treated properly and quickly in case of emergencies.

    Seek medical attention instantly

    Seek immediate medical attention after you have a heart attack - call emergency service or rely on your family for timely transportation. Studies show that about 90 per cent or more of people who suffer heart attack live if they reach the hospital alive.

    Remember that ambulance or medics will need time to reach you. You should get someone to drive you to a nearby hospital. You should not drive yourself as you might become unconscious after few minutes.

    In case you are on road, you should call 911 and stop the car.

    Let people around you know you are having a heart attack

    You should let people or your family members around you know that you are having a heart attack. In case the situation gets worse, someone can give you CPR in order to save you.
