How to Hydroseed a Lawn

Hydroseeding is a seed planting technique which utilises a mixture of mulch and seed in water and fertiliser. Hydroseeding was first used in the United States in the early 1950s, whereas in the United Kingdom, it was used in 1960s. This method works best for seeding large areas of land such as a playing field. If you are planning to hydroseed a lawn, it is important that you choose the right time of the year.

Things Required:

– Water
– Seeds
– A hose
– Tank
– Fertiliser
– Wood mulch or cellulose fibre

Instructions

  • 1

Add wood mulch or cellulose fibre to a tank and then add water, seed and fertiliser. Thoroughly mix the contents of the tank and then attach the tank to a hose.

Be sure to use enough quantity of wood mulch or cellulose fibre because these are an important source of nutrients for the seed and also provide protection against sunlight and other harsh climatic factors.

The ideal time for hydroseeding a lawn is just before when the grass in the lawn begins to grow i.e. when a new season start is around the corner. At this time of the year, spray the entire lawn area with the mixture you had prepared in the first step. Ensure that no patch of garden remains unsprayed.

When your lawn starts to grow, check for lawn patches with slow or no visible growth. You would need to touch up such patches which should be fairly easy.

  • 4

After you have hydroseeded the entire lawn, closely monitor it for at least two weeks. You would want to ensure that the wood mulch or cellulose fibre you used while preparing the hydroseeding mixture remains sodden. A possible way to ensure this is to lightly wet the lawn thrice every day for the first two weeks.

Following the first two weeks, continue with Step 4 for another two weeks. However, gradually decrease the frequency at which you water the lawn until you reach the point where you do not need to wet the lawn at all.
