First, you must know about your picking hand. The picking hand has to be the one with which you will later strum the guitar. In case of acoustic guitars, your picking hand will be placed on top of the hole which creates the sound. The other hand, however, has to be the one with which you will play the notes. In this case, the stronger hand must be your picking hand as well.
For example, if you are a right-handed person, your strumming hand should be your right hand while your left hand should be used to play the notes. Once you know which hand to use for strumming, opt for that type of acoustic guitar. -

Now within right-handed or left-handed acoustic guitars, there are several options to choose from. There are nylon stringed guitars, and there are steel stringed guitars. You have to select which one will suit you most. A guitar with nylon strings will not give you a lot of trouble while playing, since the strings are soft. However, tuning a nylon guitar can be troublesome.
Why? It’s because the strings are thick and you must tighten the guitar every time the strings loosen up. On the other hand, a steel stringed guitar will be hard to play. You will notice how your fingers will ache once you play this type of guitar for half an hour. Therefore, if you are an amateur, opt for a nylon stringed guitar. -

Lastly, you must know about the fret-board of your choice. There are a few guitars with smaller fret-boards, while the others have really long fret-boards. Select the one which you believe you can handle easily. If you are into soloing, you can always opt for a long neck. However, if you just want to play rhythms, always opt for a smaller fret-board as it will be easier for you to handle.
