How to Install a Car Starter

A common problem that occurs with cars, mostly older ones, is that their engines fail to start quickly or sometimes do not start at all no matter how many times you turn the key in the ignition switch. Old car starters are a possible cause for such problems. This means you are left with no other option but to change the starter of your car. Although it can be rather difficult and time consuming, it is possible to change the car starter at home.

Things Required:

– Starter
– Wrenches
– Sockets
– Screwdriver
– Pliers
– Ramps
– Jack
– Jack stands
– Chocks

Instructions

  • 1

Gather all the things you will need for the completion of this task and place them near the vehicle.

  • 2

To ensure you are working in a safe environment, disconnect the cable attached to the negative terminal of your car’s battery.

  • 3

Jack up the front end of your car with a car jack and support it with jack stands. Use chocks to block the car’s rear wheels and engage the hand break to make sure that the vehicle does not slide off the jack.

  • 4

In almost all cars, the starter is located near the manifold on the driver’s side. Locate your car’s old starter because you will need to remove it before the new one can be installed. Remove wires attached to the starter’s terminal and mark them to keep track of how the wires will need to be reconnected.

  • 5

Remove the cable keeping the unit attached to the car’s battery. Also, remove the wires attached to the solenoid and brackets that may be keeping the starter from moving.

  • 6

Use an open face or a socket wrench to detach the bolts holding the starter to the car’s chassis and then unfasten the unit carefully.

  • 7

Carefully lift the old starter and place it in the box in which the new unit was delivered. This makes it easy to store.

  • 8

Simply reverse steps 4 through 6 to install the new car starter and then reconnect the car’s battery.

  • 9

Try to start the car’s engine. If it starts properly that means the starter is working properly.
