How to Cite a Quote in an Article

Plagiarism is done when you use another person’s words, work or ideas as your own. On the other hand, it can be when you use someone’s ideas, words or work and do not give them their due credit in the source. You can prevent the latter situation by giving the deserved credit to them. There are two major citation styles that offer a general means of citing reproducible sources. The first is American Psychological Association or APA style which is used in social sciences and the second is Modern Language Association or MLA style usually used in the liberal arts and humanities. There are several ways to cite a quote in an article effectively.

Instructions

  • 1

    Getting started

Try to add the quote smoothly into your document. You should use a complex or compound sentence in which about one or two clauses have just your original ideas or words. The other clause can be the quote. For instance, Because John cannot understand the notion of love, he misunderstands Julia’s feelings for him when she tells him, “I love you the most in the entire world.” Make use of parentheses at the end of the sentence to show the author and original page number where the quote is written. Use a space between the page number and the author’s family name.

  • 2

    Parentheses

Exclude other punctuation inside the parentheses and avoid using the p. or pp. notation. Shift the period from the end of the sentence and put it after ending the parenthesis. This binds the citation to the quote in the article. For example, Because John cannot understand the notion of love, he misunderstands Julia’s feelings for him when she tells him, “I love you the most in the entire world” (Armin 175).

    Works cited

Cite the source on the Works Cited page. This will be on the last page of the paper. At the top, place the words “Work Cited” without quotation marks. After that, add the entries in alphabetical order depending on the first word of the entry, normally the author’s last name. You will have to include the author’s full name, last name first, the title of the book in capital and underline format, the city of publication close to your area, the publishing company and a recent copyright year.
