Instructions

  • 1

Be sure to carry along dog treats when taking the dog for a training session. This will make it easier for you to get your dog’s attention and thus keep it focused on the task at hand.

  • 2

Take your dog to an isolated area if possible. Isolation means no distractions and thus your chances of successfully training your dog to walk without a leash would improve dramatically.

  • 3

Make your dog stand still and move yourself to the dog’s left side. Get the full attention of your dog by holding a few dog treats in your right hand.

  • 4

When you feel confident that the dog is fully attentive and you are all set to walk with the dog, give it a verbal command such as ‘Let’s Go’ or ‘Heel’. The dog will look forwards to the exercise if the commands you are giving are in a happy tone.

  • 5

While you are uttering the verbal command, simultaneously start moving forward. This will prompt the dog to move in the same direction.

During the walk, your dog may be tempted to veer away, lag behind or move ahead of you. Prevent this from happening attracting the dog’s attention towards yourself with a verbal command. Use a clicker to keep track of the number of times your dog’s succeeds in a single training session.

As is the case with most living beings, perfection can only be gained after long hours of practice. Keeping in mind that it would be best to hold practice sessions every day until the dog has learned to walk beside you without a leash.
