    Inspect the Deck

The first step will be to inspect the deck for the damage that it has sustained over a period of time. There are going to be loose planks as well as those that have been damaged badly due to one reason or another. Also, see if the surface is in good shape or has been damaged as well.

    Replace Damaged Planks

Fix the loose planks and replace the damaged ones with new ones. This will add more life to your deck and it will look great when it is refinished.

  • 3

    Wash It

Use a power washer for this purpose. Make sure that you discuss the use with the tool provider as different kinds of wood need different pressures, and too much pressure can quickly ruin the surface.

  • 4

    Sand It

Once the surface has dried up, use an electric sander to remove the damaged fibres on the surface. Sand evenly to give a nice final finish to the deck. It is also important in order to prepare the deck for the staining of the surface, which will be done a little later.

    Select a Wood Stain

Select a stain that you would like to have on your deck’s surface. There are different colours that are available. Pick the one that you like the most. Also make sure that you pick one that contains a surface sealant, to protect against moisture and ensure that the deck withstands the harsh weather conditions.

    Stain It

Ensure that the surface has been free of water for two days before you apply the stain. Use the stain applicators that are available at your home improvement stores. Pay special attention to the even application of the wood stain so that the surface has an even finish. Finish the job and allow ample time to dry before using the deck. Once refinished, it will look as good as new.
