How to Be Friendly and Outgoing at Work

The word “work” is considered synonymous will “dull”, “hectic”, and “physically or mentally exhausting” by the majority of the people. You can, however, make work more enjoyable and satisfying by socialising with your colleagues. Make plans to meet them outside your workplace to take the budding relationship to the next level.

By being friendly and outgoing at work, you will eventually become so fond of your workplace and colleagues that you will find yourself looking forward to weekdays.

If you are somewhat shy and possess neither great social skills, nor a very outgoing personality, then there are a few things that you need to learn and adhere to in order become more popular among your colleagues and more outgoing.

  • 1

When you arrive at the office in the morning, make it a point to say a “hi” or “hello” with a smile to your colleagues. This would make your personality come off as pleasant and project you as a friendly person - one who is willing to interact with those around him/her. Your colleagues may take it as an invitation and start interacting with you more.

  • 2

During lunch break, do not sit alone. Instead, look to sit with your colleagues. Make sure you do not sit with the same group of people every day. Offer to share your food with them. Even though the phrase “sharing is caring” is normally taught to kids, it holds true for adults as well.

  • 3

Look for opportunities to help your colleagues. Not only will they appreciate your help, they will start liking and respecting you more. Do not expect others to offer their help when you need it, as that would leave you vulnerable to disappointments. Be selfless and expect nothing in return when doing something good for someone.

  • 4

Do not indulge in gossiping. Most of the time, it is difficult to tell with surety if the information that has become part of the gossip is true or fabricated and exaggerated. Spreading gossip is just as bad as starting it. Therefore, refrain from both things in order to earn the respect of your office colleagues.

  • 5

Once you are on good terms with your colleagues, they may invite you to hang out with them after work. Even if you are not that outgoing, do not turn down their offer. Do not expect them to beg you to join them.

  • 6

Instead of waiting for others to make plans, plan something yourself and invite your colleagues to join you. Show them that you are an exciting person, who is always ready to go out and have fun. Invite them over to your house and accept their invitation when they have something planned at their place.

  • 7

Never discuss work while hanging out with your colleagues, as that can make the outing pretty dull.
