How to Take a Punch in Boxing

Whenever you are involved in a fight, there is every chance that you might take some hits by the other person. Even if you are a professional and the other person is not, he/she will fight back and try to punch you where it hurts.

When it comes to a boxing match, it is almost certain that you will get hit by your opponent. Therefore, you have to prepare to take punches in a way that you don’t end up losing the fight. Taking punches doesn’t mean that you have to wait for the other person to deliver the hits on your face, but is actually about preparing yourself to reduce the force of blows you receive.

Instructions

  • 1

    Relax mentally

The first thing you need to ensure is that you don’t panic at all, no matter what the situation is. Some boxers are mentally relaxed before the match, but things change when they go into the fight. So, you have to prepare yourself mentally during the fight. A single sign of panic will allow your opponent to exploit and dominate you.

  • 2

    Avoid taking punches

Although you will be hit during the fight, it is ideal to avoid as many blows as possible. That will wear your opponent down and you will be able to attack him/her later in the match.

  • 3

    Deflect blows

With the help of your fists and arms, try deflecting the blows from your rival. This will obviously hurt you to some extent, but it will cause more damage to the other person and you will eventually lose lesser points.

  • 4

    Strengthen your neck

When you take punches, there is a lot of pressure on your neck. Therefore, work hard in the gym in order to improve your neck muscles. This way, you will not take much damage even if you are hit extremely hard.

  • 5

    Improve your balance

The balance of your body needs to be perfect otherwise you will not be able to withstand your opponent's blows and will be knocked out in the initial rounds. In order to improve your balance, strengthen your lower back and leg muscles.

  • 6

    Put up some weight

Work hard in the gym to put up some weight in order to take the heavy blows during a boxing match.

  • 7

    Roll with the punch

When you feel that the punch cannot be avoided, roll with it in order to make it less effective.
