How to Calculate Total Bases

Statistics may just appear to be nothing more than numbers, but in reality, they hold the key to gaining a comprehensive understanding of anything, be it business, politics, psychology, or sports.

In baseball, there are various statistics that are of interest to all those who follow the game keenly. One such statistic is the number of total bases. It shows the productivity of a batter by stating the exact number of bases that he has gained with hits. One thing to note however, is that the aforementioned statistic only takes the bases gained with hits into account. Bases that are stolen off another player’s hit or gained due to walking are not counted.

The process of calculating total bases for a batter is pretty simple, though it requires a fair amount of research.

Things Required:

– Computer with Internet connectivity

The first thing that you need to do is to find out the number of singles the batter has gained with hits. You will need to do a bit of research in order to find this number. Internet and sports-related websites such as ESPN will be of great assistance to you while looking up the number of singles.

Once you have found out the number of singles gained with hits by the batter, multiply them by 1. Note this value down somewhere.

  • 3

Next, find out the number of doubles that the batter gained with hits. Again, use whatever means of research are available to you to find this stat out. Multiply this stat by 2. It is recommended that you use a calculator to make the calculation in order to reduce the risk of an error. Be sure to note the value down.

  • 4

Find out the number of times the batter has gained three bases after slugging the ball and multiply this stat by 3 and record the value. Once again, the use of a calculator is strongly recommended.

  • 5

Finally, look up the number of home runs hit by the batter and multiply it by 4, using a calculator of course. Write the value down somewhere. Those familiar with baseball already know that a home run refers to a clean hit by the batter that sends the ball flying into the stands and, in some instances, out of the park. This allows the batter to make a complete circuit of bases and score a run for his team.

Once you have multiplied singles by 1, doubles by 2, triples by 3 and homes by 4, add the resultant values to get the total bases.
