How to Hit a Drum Properly
People widely believe that beating a drum is extremely easy and you can do it just the way you want. However, there is a proper way to do it and everyone should learn if they want to become good drum players. The two basic ways to hit a drum include: using your hands and using a stick. Both these methods will give out a different sound and it totally depends on the player how he/she wants to hit the drum. Moreover, people using their hands use different hand postures to create a different sound, while the ones holding the stick use different grips to do the same.

If you are planning to hit a drum with your hands, you should know that there are different ways through which you can take out the perfect sound. While some would use their palms and fingers, others would only use their fingers. Hold the drum between your legs, and if it is big then simply place it right in front of you. Use the finger tips and try to slap the corner most area of the drum. You can slap the center most area of the drum as well. This will however create a more hollow sound as compared to the former option.
If you want the sound to be damp, simply put your palm right at the corner of the drum and hit the center. This will put an end to the echo caused by the hollow area inside the drum and add a damp touch to the whole thing. -

If you are planning to hit the drum with a stick, you must know how to have the perfect grip. While some would grab the stick from the corner, others iike to hold it right from the center. Both grips help you take out different sounds. Grab a stick from the corner and put your index finger on top. Put the stick close to the corner of the drum and use your index finger to force the stick on to the instrument. You will notice that the sound created will have a higher treble. On the other hand, use the same grip but hold the stick right from the center. This is going to help you make the sound a bit damper as compared to before. Simply use your index finger to hit the stick on to the surface. Use different grips on both the hands to take out more than one type of sound at a time.
