How to Enable Remote Access on Windows XP

Have you ever wondered whether it is possible to access and operate your computer from a remote location? Yes, it is indeed possible and very easy to accomplish. Windows XP has a built-in feature known as the Remote desktop Connection, that will allow you to connect to your computer from any part of the world. However, before this can be done, you will need to make sure that remote access is enabled on your Windows XP computer.

Login to you computer using the administrator account and then click the ‘Start’ button. Keep in mind that remote access cannot be enabled using an account with limited rights, so it is important that you login with the administrator account.

This will open a dialogue box labelled ‘Properties’ with multiple tabs. Look for the tab labelled ‘Remote’ and click it. Under this tab, check the option labelled ‘Allow users to connect remotely to this computer’.

If you would like to remotely access this computer using an account other than the administrator account, you will need to click the button captioned ‘Select Remote Users’. Then click the ‘Add’ button and list all the users whom you would want to grant remote access. Make sure that the accounts you add are real and exist on your computer.

Click the OK button for the changes you just made to take effect. Remote access is now enabled on your computer. However, if your computer is behind a router and you would like to access it via internet, you will have to forward the 3389 port to the computer. This can be done using the router’s web interface. On information on how to access the router’s web interface, read the instructions manual that came with the router.
