    Sort Out Your Syllabus

This first step is to segregate that part of the text book(s) which relates to the syllabus that has been assigned for the examination. Put coloured paper markers at the start and end of these chapters (pages). For example, the start tag could be of yellow colour and the end tag can be red. Now you can mark the shortcuts for chapter names on these tags.

    Mark the Text

Inside each chapter, mark all the important formulas and passages, which you think might come into use during the exam. Use a highlighter to do that. Here, it is important not to highlight everything; otherwise you will get yourself confused.

    Read through the Text

After marking, go through the text thoroughly. Check in the exercises if any question is related to the passage you are reading and explore the possibility of other questions which can be made from that text. Write those questions and their solutions on a separate piece of paper and staple it with the page. This will help you in retaining the information. These papers can be removed before you proceed to the examination hall.

    Don’t Miss Anything

When it comes to open book examinations, instructors will never ask you questions which are already there in the exercises. Instead, they will combine small conceptual questions and constitute a problem out of them. These little pieces of information can only be uncovered if you are thorough with your studies. Even if you don’t know the direct answer, your organization should be so precise that you reach the relevant passage(s) within no time.
