Winterizing in 7 Easy Steps

Now that summer is over and autumn is drawing to a close, most of us just want to curl up beside a fire; with a blanket, a hot cup of coco, and wait out the winter. Sounds good doesn’t it? However, before we can start relaxing, we must first winterize our home; to make sure that we stay nice and toasty throughout the long winter months.

Here are 7 ways to make sure that you not only stay warm but safe as well. Now, let’s slap those work gloves on and go outside.

The gutters

Many people forget to look up when they are cleaning. The gutters are very important in carrying water away from the foundation of our home. We need to remove all dead leaves and other foreign items from the gutters, before using a water hose to rinse them out. In doing so, we can see where there are leaks or downspouts that need repaired. This prevents ice from forming, which can cause gutters to break away from the home or cause water to leak into the house.

Insulate

By making sure that your attic and walls have proper insulation you are not only saving dollars in your heating bill – but you are also keeping the cold winter winds out.

Furnace

A furnace will not work efficiently if the filter is not changed. The filter should be changed before the furnace is turned on and then at least three more times before spring. The duck-work needs inspected for holes or separation from the vents. The vents and return vents should be vacuumed out before the furnace is turned on and once more in February.

Windows and doors

A lot of draft can come in through windows and doors. Make sure the windows have proper cocking around the outside frames, and the doors insulation stripping that is between the door and the threshold is not ripped or missing.

Alarms

Make sure every room has a smoke alarm and that the batteries are changed twice a year.

Fireplaces and wood-stoves

Chimneys and stovepipes must be cleaned out and checked for any damage. Grates, bricks and pipes need to be inspected for cracks. Replace anything that is questionable.

Water pipes

Make sure all water pipes are wrapped with insulation, and if your water meter is on your property cover it with an insulated rubber mat.
