6 Quick Tips to Reduce Electricity Usage in the Home This Christmas

We all know the benefits of reducing electricity in the home. It reduces your carbon footprint and lowers your energy bills, among others. Here are six quick tips on how to reduce electricity usage in the home during this Christmas season.

Use LED Christmas Lights
Check for broken bulbs and frayed wires when hanging your Christmas lights this season. Replace them if necessary with the newer LED style. If they’re okay, then use what you’ve got. It doesn’t make sense, either economically or environmentally, to throw a good set of lights in the landfill.

Check Your Filters
Air conditioners and furnaces use filters to protect components from being damaged. They also work to keep the air clean in your home. Clogged filters make your equipment work harder to keep the air circulating. Check them at least twice a year and clean or replace as required.

Check Your Intake
If you have an air exchanger, make sure that both the intake and exhaust are clear of snow or any other obstruction. Reduced airflow causes this equipment to work at less than optimum efficiency, costing you more money to operate it.

Check for Blocked Ducts
Check every room in your house to make sure that nothing is blocking the heating vents. Avoid placing long drapes or furniture directly over a vent as this restricts the airflow, requiring more energy to heat or cool your home .

Use Energy-Efficient Bulbs
Compact fluorescent and LED bulbs cost a little more than regular bulbs, but they last far longer and use less electricity. They’ve become more popular in recent years and are now available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes for virtually every type of light fixture. Go through your house and check which ones need to be replaced before your holiday guests arrive.

Use Timers on Your Lights
Leaving lights on constantly not only wastes electricity, it doesn’t fool potential burglars. You’re better off using timers to control your lights, whether they’re outside or inside. Newer style digital timers allow you to program different settings for each day of the week. That will keep those bad guys guessing whether or not you’re home for Christmas.
