Clean Your Own Carpet

A professional carpet cleaner cleans with the guidelines and the tools that they are given. They don’t get to use their imaginations and experiment with different things like I have. If you have a steam cleaner then this will be a lot easier for you; if not then consider renting one because it is a crucial part of getting the carpets back into shape.

Carpets become dirty when they are simply walked on for months and years at a time, there is dirt on our shoes, socks and feet. Dust also falls constantly from surfaces and lands and sticks inside the carpet which gets pushed down and stuck in the carpet making it appear darker. Areas where there is less traffic are always cleaner for this reason. Vacuuming daily helps eliminate heavily soiled areas by lifting out excess dirt and hair.

Once you have decided that you don’t want to hire a professional to clean your carpets, either because it is too pricy or you didn’t have a good experience with a carpet cleaning company in the past; I would say you are making a good choice. Nobody cares for the appearance of your carpet like you do and during this process you are going to really work for those good end results.

First vacuum the floor
, do it for twice as long as you normally would.

You will need:
Baking soda (a lot of it)
Blue dawn soap
Hot water
Steam cleaner vacuum

  • Pick out an area of the carpet that you want to work on first, and you will slowly work your way outward. Use this patch as a reference for what color the rest of the carpet should be.
  • Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, kind of rub it into the area with your bare hands; it only takes a minute.
  • Fill the tank of the steam cleaner with hot water and pour about three squirts of the blue dawn soap directly where you pour in the water.
  • Completely saturate the area with the hot soapy water. You may need to add more water to the steam cleaner before the area is soaked, depending on the size of your steam cleaner.
  • Let is sit for a few minutes; then suck it all up, make sure you suck out as much water as you can.
  • Depending on how dirty the carpet is, you may have to repeat this process.

If you do not have a steam cleaner (it will take longer but is still possible). Get a giant bowl, fill it with hot water, two hand fulls of baking soda, and three squirts of blue dawn soap. Get a scrub brush and a rag. Dip the scrub brush in the mixture and start scrubbing away, use the dampened rag to wipe up the soapiness and dirt. This mixture will work great on stains anywhere in your house!
