It can happen to anyone: you put something in your house, garage, shed, or basement, and you forget all about it. The next thing you know, the item has been there for years – even decades. Sometimes, the object is large, heavy, or bulky, and you just don’t want to deal with getting rid of it. That’s likely true if you have an old file cabinet. After you’ve cleaned all the antiquated paperwork out of it do you really want to try to get it to the dump? And then, will they charge you to dump it? Look, don’t even worry about it; do something else with that file cabinet and you won’t even leave your home for that old cabinet to disappear.
Okay, I’ll admit that, even though you turn the file cabinet into something useful, you’ll still have to get rid of the drawers; maybe you can make something out of them, too. But for now, let’s concentrate on the cabinet itself. You can very quickly turn it into a useful organizer for the garage, shed, or basement. In fact, it will literally take just a couple of minutes to give the cabinet a new life.
A bulky, metal file cabinet – whether it has two drawers, three, or more – makes the best organizer for many things found in the average person’s garage, basement, or shed. It can be challenging – and expensive – to find an organizer for shovels, rakes, push brooms, and such things. But with a file cabinet, you’ve got that organizer. Simply remove the drawers from the cabinet and you’re almost finished building it.
Lay the file cabinet on its back so that the drawer openings are facing upward. That’s all you have to do to create an organizer for large items, especially things with long handles. Use it to store yard torches, extra curtain rods, dowel rods, gardening implements, and so much more. Stick magnetic hooks to the sides of the cabinet to hold cords, rope, tape, and other small things.
A file cabinet, when it’s full of shovels, rakes, and such, isn’t the easiest thing to move around. So, if you want the organizer to be mobile, attach wheels to the bottom (formerly the back). Casters to fit the file cabinet are sold at home improvement stores; screw one to each corner.
Thankfully, you’ve found something to do with that old file cabinet, so you have one less bulky thing, stored in your home for decades. Now, let’s talk about what to do with that old refrigerator…
