5 Steps to Easily Remove Carpet Dents

Dent. Dent. Dent. Everywhere you look a dent. On your car? No! In your carpet where heavy furniture used to sit. Can you remove these unsightly dents in your carpet? You betcha! And easily, too.

Step One: Round Up Items Needed

You will to get a few tools to help you remove the dent in the carpet. The good thing is the items you’ll need almost always will be lying around your home. First, you need to grab ice cubes. Collect enough to cover the dent(s). Second, you will need to find a towel. Third, you will need a fork, preferably not a plastic one. I’ll describe how to use each of these items in the following steps.

Step Two: Move the Furniture

This almost goes without saying, but if you haven’t already done so, move the furniture that created the dent off the dent. If the object you need to move is heavy, get some help from another person and use proper lifting technique.

Step Three: Put Ice in the Dent

Gather enough ice cubes to fully cover the dent in the carpet. Depending on the size of the dent and the size of the ice cubes, you may need to as many as a dozen. Then sit and wait while the ice melts. The carpet dent will absorb moisture and start to puff up again as the ice dissolves.

Step Four: Blot Out the Excess Moisture

Wipe out the excess moisture with a towel. You want the carpet damp, not soaked. You don’t want wet conditions that will promote mold and mildew growth on or under the carpet. Try not to apply too much pressure the carpet, though, as you wipe up the wetness or you’ll undo some of what you accomplished in step three.

Step Five: Pull Up on Carpet

Grab the fork you had set aside previously. Now use the fork to gently lift up on the carpet, one little area at a time. This will take a few minutes, so be patient. And don’t use too much force; you don’t want to pull out carpet fibers and leave the area noticeably thinned out.

After all five steps, the carpet dent should be gone or largely so. If the dent was deep, however, you might have to repeat steps three through five several times over the course of a few days.

Everyone with carpeted homes has at one time or other dealt with carpet dents from heavy objects. While it may not seem that carpet dents would be easily removed, the good news is they are actually easy to undo and the tools needed to do the job are almost always readily available.
