How to Make Your Own Non-Toxic Household Cleaning Products

Perhaps you’ve started thinking about all of the household products you use that are packed full of chemicals that you know are going to find their way out of your house and into some stream or perhaps now you have children that want to help you clean and you find yourself gasping at the long list of chemcials in the products that you’ve been using to clean your house with. Either way, if you’re looking for a new way to keep your house clean, a way that will be both friendlier to the environment and also safer for you and your family, read on.

It’s frightening to think that when you’re cleaning your house you’re actually spraying everything with chemicals that could hurt you and your family. Why use these dangerous household products when you could make your own homemade ones that are just as effective, if not more so?

You’ll find when looking in your cupboards that you’ll probably already have everything you need to make your house sparkling clean. The first two things that I always make sure I have are white vinegar and baking soda. I use these products for practically everything!

Cleaning Bathrooms

When it’s time to clean your bathroom, baking soda and white vinegar are your friends. I sprinkle baking soda around the bathtub, tiles, sink and toilet and then I use a spray bottle filled with white vinegar and spray near where I’ve placed the baking soda beforehand. Add warm or hot water to this from the bathtub and sink faucets and scrub away all the dirt. You’ll find your bathtub, sink and toilet sparkling clean, perhaps even more sparkling and clean looking than it’s been before and this is all achieved by using natural and non-toxic products. If you’re looking for a nice, clean smell to your bathroom, add some freshly squeezed lemon juice to the mix for a lovely citrus fragrance.

Cleaning Windows

Mix 2 tablespoons of white vinegar with 1 quart of warm water and spray onto windows. Use paper towels to clean and your windows will be spotless in no time.

Cleaning and Mopping Floors

This is another instance where you can add some white vinegar to a bucket of warm or hot water and mop away. However, this is best for vinyl floors. If you have wood floors, just use 1/2 cup of vinegar to your warm water and try to keep your mop as dry as possible – put the minimum amount of vinegar and water on your mop when cleaning with hardwood floors.
