How to Remove and Store a Room-Size Air Conditioner
If you use a room-size air conditioner during the summer months, you can simply leave it in the window at the end of the season. Wrap it with an airtight cover and you’re ready for winter. Or, you can take it out of the window and put it away. To prevent damage and help extend the life of your unit, read this informative article and find out how to remove and store a room-size air conditioner.
Notes-
a. You’ll need a screwdriver, a twist-tie, work gloves, and if you have it, the original box the unit came in.
b. These are general instructions for a typically-installed air conditioner. Refer to the owner’s manual or contact the manufacturer for specific un-installation instructions.
Removal Instructions
1. Turn off and unplug the unit. Wrap the cord up and secure it with the twist-tie so it’s out of the way.
2. Remove the piece that’s located in between the windows that seals the sash.
3. Remove the screws that hold any safety locks in place.
4. Remove any screws that secure the room-size air conditioner to the window frame.
5. Have a helper stand outside and help hold the unit. Slide both side panels towards the air conditioner.
6. Do a quick inspection to make sure the room-size air conditioner is no longer secured to the window. Put the work gloves on. Then, raise the window sash. Tip the unit backwards at a 45-degree angle to drain any water.
7. Grab the air conditioner firmly. Lift it up and out of the window.
Storage Instructions
Place the unit in its original box if you have it. Otherwise, a plastic bag will work well. To avoid damage to the compressor, never place it on its side or upside down. Always set it on its bottom side.
Store the air conditioner in the attic, basement, or in the garage. Don’t put it anywhere it can fall down, and don’t stack items on top of it.
