How to Cover Window Wells

Basement window wells must be covered to protect opening from rain and other debris. Rain water can accumulate and fill an uncovered basement window well. The water can erode the sealants around the window which results in water leaking into the basement. Accumulated water in the window well also causes damage to masonry and wooden home exteriors. You can cover your basement window wells with readily available products and a few basic tools.

1) Measure your basement round style window wells. Use the tape measure to gauge the distance from the ground to the top of the window frame. Measure the distance between the two ends of the window well at the point where they connect with the house. Measure the distance between the center of the window well and the house. Write down your dimensions.

2) Measure the outside perimeter of window wells that are square or irregularly shaped. Measure each side in addition to the height from the ground to the top of the window. Write down the dimensions of the window well. Make a drawing that shows the shape and measurements of the well.

3) Visit your local building supply store such as Lowe’s, Home Depot or Builders Square. These stores stock a selection of basement window well covers. Find a pre-made window well cover that will fit your window well. These pre-made window well cover are inexpensive and designed for easy installation.

Install the window well according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use the hardware recommended by the manufacturer to secure the window well cover to the house. Make sure you use the proper type of fasteners to secure the window well to a wood or masonry exterior.
