5 Steps to a Motion Activated Flood Lamp

Your home’s and family’s security is important. That’s why installing motion activated security lighting around your home can help provide lighting when you need it most. When a would-be intruder activates the sensor, the powerful flood lamp bulbs turn on, brightly illuminating any would-be burglars hiding spot. Install your own flood lamp security lighting using these simple five steps and you can rest assured knowing you and your family are safe.

Finding a Location

Many motion activated security lamps mount directly to the fascia of the home. Find the location that best captures the sunlight for the solar panel. Direct the flood light to the area you want illuminated and aim the sensor accordingly. These are all factors that should be taken into consideration when installing a solar powered motion activated security flood lamp system.

Securing the Lamp

Most solar powered motion activated security flood lamps can be secured in place using a decking screw designed for outdoor use since many of the provided screws are often cheap zinc-plated wood screws and can easily pull away from the fascia in no time fast. Be sure to place a bit of caulk at each screw penetration to prevent water damages to the fascia. Seal the perimeter of the fixture only if no waterproof gasket has been provided.

Securing the PV Panel

The photovoltaic or PV panel is used to charge the flood lamp system. This usually contains a specific amount of wire that can run back to the battery and panel. Choose a PV panel location that gets the most sunlight throughout the day yet is within reach of the battery and lamp. Secure the PV panel to the side of your fascia in the same manner as described for the flood lamp.

Charging the Battery

Once the PV panel is secure, connect all of the wiring according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Allow the panel to charge the entire day. Do not turn the battery on during the first night! Let the battery charge completely the following day, then turn on the security light switch the following day and your light will be ready to go.

Checking the Sensors

Most security lights have switches that can set the light for full on after dark or motion activated. Switch the sensor to the motion detection unit and walk around the perimeter of the light in arcs every 4 feet. Aim the sensor light upwards for greater long distance sensitivity and downwards for better accuracy.
