How to Get Those Gutters Unclogged and Keep Them that Way

Unfortunately that last thing that many people think about when it comes to home maintenance is their gutters. But the gutters just like everything else if not promptly cared for can cost you even more time and money in the end. The first thing that you need to do is check them and unclog them. All you will need to unclog your gutters is a ladder and some gloves. But before you begin removing all of the debris that is clogging the gutter you will have to cover the opening into the downspout by using an oversized rag or towel. This will help to prevent the debris from falling into the downspout. Next you will need to scrape away the blockage into a bucket. You can very easily place the bucket on the side of the ladder. Or if you do not want to carry a bucket all the way to the top of the ladder then you can use a garbage bag instead.

Once you have mad sure that you have unclogged the gutter, you can remove your rag or towel that is covering the opening to the downspout, and pour water along the gutter. The water should run freely. If however it does not then your downspout may be blocked. When you have finished cleaning out the gutter it is now time to make sure that it does not constantly get clogged. This can cause problems for you especially in the winter months, when snow and ice on to of the debris can really cause serious damage to both the gutter and the downspout. This is why it is so important to make out a schedule for preventive maintenance and make sure that you stick with the schedule. Remember that a clogged drain can cause additional problems not only to the downspout but to your roof as well. As any homeowner knows damage to your roof can be a costly repair.

Which will mean that during the fall, you can end of with a lot of dead leaves collecting in your gutters, and blocking the flow of water. This is why it is important to inspect your gutters on a regular basis to keep your gutters unclogged. If you notice that there are any leaks in your gutters or downspouts you should quickly seal these with waterproof caulk. You can even apply a coat of topcoat gloss paint (the good kind). This will help to provide additional protection for your metal gutters.
