How to Make a Clock Out of an Old Tire

This tire clock is a fun accent piece that should fit into quite a few different home décor styles. This tire clock would look great in a workstation in the garage, a small boy’s room, the basement reck room, or even in an industrial loft. This would also be fun in an office of a business that sells trucks or even John Deer products! Have fun changing out the colors and you can create a unique tie piece that will have everyone looking.

To Make a Clock Out of an Old Tire You Will Need:

One Big Old Tire
Sheet of Plywood, pine wood, or even birch)
Clock Kit
Primer
Paint
Sandpaper
Wooden Numbers
Wood Glue
Power Drill
Battery (Probably AA)

Now, the first step is always to clean the tire. Once this has completely dried then you can paint it.

Spray on a coat of primer to the outside of the tire. You won’t be seeing the inside so your can skip that step if you want.

Once the primer had dried you can apply your coat of paint. Spray on any color you want. Camouflage would look cool.

If you don’t want to paint the tire you could really shine it up with a tire shining product to make it look brand new.

Now, cut out a circle of wood that is slightly beiger than the circle of the inside of your tire.

Drill a small hole in the middle of the circle. This will be for your clock kit, so you may want to take a look at that and see if there are any size recondition for this small hole. You don’t have to center the clock face; you could offset it of room visual interest.

Lightly sand it, and then wipe away any dust. Spray on a coat of primer. Let the primer dry.

Now, spray on a coat of paint in any color you want. I like the face to contrast from the body of the tire but that is a personally choice. For a sleek clock you could paint the tire a steel gray and the face of the clock a steel gray as well. Metallic paints would also be rally fun.

Now, once the paint has dried you can install the circle of wood into the tire. I like to run a bead of thick epoxy glue inside the tire. Push your piece of wood through the back and press it into this bead of glue form the inside. You may get some dust or smudges on your circle of wood. You can wipe these off with a Mr. Clean magic eraser or simply retouch up the paint. Let the glue dry complete before moving on.

Now, you are ready to install your clock kit. Follow the direction on the clock kit box. Each kit will be slightly different. I find clock kits at the hardware store, the home improvement store, and almost every single arts and craft store out there. I recommend a clock kit that runs on a battery so that you do not have to have a cord hanging out of the back of the tire, but that is complexly up to you.

Now, some clock kits will come with numbers, but you may find that they are too small for this project. You can use these great wooden numbers sold at the arts and craft store for this if you want. I like to paint them out, glue them on and really make this look great!

Pop a battery into your clock kit and you can now hang your tire on the wall. If you are hanging it in an office e why nothing it where everyone will see it! This will be a really conversation starter with co workers and customers alike!

Just remember, you can make this tire clock with any sized tire! From a John Deer tractor tire to a small little Gator tire!
