How to Dispose of Autumn Leaves

Autumn leaves have been pictured and sung about in all ages. The sight of them brings back old memories and emotions. Much that Autumn leaves look beautiful in their golden glory and smell heavenly musty, they should not be let lying around in the lawn for long. They block air and sunlight to the grass underneath which suffocates. In windy days, these leaves can turn out to be a nuisance by flying around, even into the leaves and sticking to hoes. The lawn obviously looks messier covered with these. Our step by step guide has some tips on how to easily dispose off these leaves in a responsible manner.

    Ask for guidance:

    Call your city municipal or administration office and ask for guidance. Some authorities have their pickup systems and collect your leaves baggage from you on designated times. Even if they do not, they will provide you with tips on how to collect and dispose off the leaves.

    Use a blower or rake them into piles:

    The first thing is to collect the leaves. Use a blower or a rake to make piles out of the leaves. Collect them in large garbage bags. A mulch mower is more efficient as it picks up even the tiny particles trapped in the grass with the 'bagger' option.  Now that the leaves are collected, you have to decide what to do with them.

    Burn the leaves:

    If you live in an area with no restriction on burning garbage, you can burn these leaves in a clear field where there is no risk of the fire spreading. Take all precautions while doing so.

    Discard in a deserted area or open plot:

    If there is an open yard in your neighborhood or a hillside or a woody area, discard the leaves there.Do this on a calm day so that the leaves do not blow around.

    Dump in a hole:

    Dig deep holes in an empty corner of the lawn, in the garage or anywhere else if you do not want leaves littering on the surface. Dump the leaves in these holes and cover up with soil. Crush the leaves so that the surface area gets decreased and more fit into one hole.

    Compost pile:

    If you have a large garden, you can make yourself a compost pile. Reserve a small area for composting by putting up wooden or wire fence. Keep your leaves in a pile here, turning them once in a while till the next season while they break down. If you cannot spare space, put them into garbage bags, add some water and fertilizer and let to compost with some holes for the air. Compost bins are also available in the market. This composted organic mixture can serve as manure for plants and vegetables in the next season.

    Vegetable garden and tree manure:

    Dig up a bit in your vegetable patch and under the plants. cover with leaves and scatter the soil again to keep the leaves from flying back. The leaves will serve as organic manure for you plants.
