Newly Released Disney’s ‘Maleficent’ Trailer

I practically waited all morning to see the Maleficent trailer. Maleficent is “self-proclaimed as the mistress of evil,” kind of sexy right? You may remember her from the Sleeping Beauty movie from 1959. According to the animation creator, Marc Davis, Maleficent was designed to look like a “giant vampire bat.” He also stated that she needed a voice to show how powerful and thrilling she was. So now that we all have an idea of how evil Maleficent was intended to be in the 1950s, let’s talk about what I gathered from the 1:26 second trailer that was released on November 13th.

The first thing that came to my mind in the beginning of the trailer was the movie Avatar. The special effects and graphics were simply stunning, and the voice-over narration had me hooked in the first 20 seconds. This film seems action packed and different from anything that Disney has done before. I really admire the direction that they are going in. The only thing that I really was not so sure about was who was playing Maleficent. Angelina Jolie is a superb actress; however I really do not think that she was the best fit for this movie. I think that Disney needed an important “poster girl” face for this and that Angelina would get a great deal of hits as far as a fan base goes. I would have been happy with an actress who we do not see on the big screen very often.

This will definitely cause a new era of Disney bandwagon fans, which is perfect for Disney and their ratings but unfortunate to people who really admire the work and scripts that Disney writers produce. I like to pay attention to content and not the actors. All of the attention in this film will be on Angelina Jolie, and to me, that is the thing that will bother me and hinder the true admirers of Disney work. I have no doubt in my mind that this will be a great movie. I am looking forward to seeing it, but I definitely will keep my hopes down to a happy medium. I hope the story line is accurate and makes sense to those who actually follow the art of storytelling.
