Ralph

Ralph wagged his tail as he surveyed the brand new piece of fenced-in land his new master told him was his yard. This day kept getting better. It had started out with the usual fresh food and water in his almost comfortable cage and a promise of a walk later. This routine had been unchanging for an eternity it seemed. These caregivers had been nice, but this wasn’t a real home.

Then his collar and leash were put on him, and he was walked to two children and two friendly looking adults. He knew the children would be friendly, because children had always liked him, but adults could be tricky. You had to watch them to tell what they wanted. Ralph was relieved they like him too. They petted him and talked very gently. In no time at all, Ralph knew this family wanted to be his friend.

The walk to the car had thrilled him; the honored position in the back seat between the two children had been the happiest ride of his life. He had been attentive as his new master showing him two bowls identifying them as his food and water dishes. Then he had been escorted to that yard!

His leash was removed, and he started his inspection. There was lots of soft, green grass, a few bushes, and a very high wooden fence. That was the only disappointment. He could hear the world beyond this yard, but he couldn’t see through the fence. He liked seeing everything, but this was still wonderful after the cage.

After a short while, the two children came into his new yard. And they brought a ball! They threw it and laughed with delight when he returned it to them. He received lots of hugs and good boys for his efforts. After the game, he found a water bowl brimming with lovely cool water.

Then came the scary moment, Ralph’s new master put a leash on him and walked him outside to the unfenced front yard. Had the grown-ups changed their minds? Didn’t they like him after all? What had he done wrong? Nothing, Ralph was relieved to discover, his new master just wanted to take him for a walk. After a tour through part of the neighborhood, they returned home. At that moment, Ralph knew he was home.
