Make Your Thanksgiving Weekend a Healthy One

Sitting. Calories. Sleeping.

Those three words sum up many of our Thanksgiving weekends. While it may be hard to escape the delicious food on the table, there is no reason why the rest of the weekend cannot be spent engaging in some of these healthy activities with friends, family, or even by yourself.

A Walk through the Park

If you are lucky enough to live somewhere with beautiful fall foliage, take advantage of it. Join friends or families for a walk, or even a run, through a nearby park filled with the colors of fall around you. The weather will only get colder so spend as much time outside as you can.

Consider Joining a Gym

There’s never a rush to join a gym, but it’s never too early to begin thinking about which one you want to become a member at. Do some research over the long holiday weekend and beat the New Year’s rush of everyone beginning a new exercise program for the sake of reaching their New Year’s Resolution. If you don’t find a gym nearby that interests you, think about investing part of your Black Friday shopping money toward a home gym.

Don’t Just Watch Football, Play It

For many families a big part of the Thanksgiving Day tradition is watching football. While there’s nothing wrong with sitting around, having fun, and snacking during the game, you should consider having catch in the backyard pregame to save a little bit of guilt when you go in for seconds when dessert time arrives.

Begin a New Diet

Post-Thanksgiving you may feel a bit bloated. Your eating habits may have hit rock bottom and a new diet could be the solution. Spend less time eating heavy carbs and more with the greens. Be sure not to rush into anything as the less prepared you are for a completely new diet the more likely you are to fall off the wagon. Plus, you may still have a few leftovers to finish.

Let a Youngster Tire You Out

It can be a younger relative or even a puppy you adore. Whichever it ends up being, surround yourself with positive young energy. The adorableness of the youngsters keeps you paying attention and playing with them even after you feel like tapping out.

Volunteer

Not every healthy activity you do is based on getting in better shape. Just as if not more is a person’s mental health. Volunteering at a soup kitchen or other charitable event can help you feel good inside. Giving back to others around the holidays could be the best healthiest thing you do.
