How to Get Started with Vitamin Infusions

Vitamin infusion therapy, also known as Myers’ cocktail, has been around for a long time. John Myers is credited for pioneering the practice of injecting patients with vitamins intravenously. Over the years, naturopaths have created modified versions of the original formula and recent use by celebrities has brought it into the media spotlight.

According to a study published by Thorne Research, Intravenous Nutrient Therapy: the “Myers’ Cocktail”, Dr. Alan R. Gaby states that “It was not clear exactly what the “Myers’ cocktail” consisted of”. However, based on information that he gathered, he believes that it consisted of “magnesium chloride, calcium gluconate, thiamine, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, calcium pantothenate, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, and dilute hydro-chloric acid.”

Some alternative medicine centers offer a wide variety of customized options that include other nutrients in addition to vitamins. As such, they believe that a more descriptive term for what they provide is “IV nutrient therapy”. These therapies are intended to be helpful with a wide variety of ailments, including allergies, asthma, fatigue, and many others. Some celebrities such as Simon Cowell affirm the benefits of these infusions and personally endorse them to their friends. In an article, The X Factor’s Simon Cowell Gets Weekly Vitamin IV Drip, he is quoted as saying “Everyone I’ve recommended it to, they’ve absolutely loved it”. However, not everyone is as enthusiastic.

The recent death of Michael Jackson drew a bit of negative publicity. A cnn article, Nurse details Michael Jackson’s fatal search for sleep, highlights the effectiveness of vitamin infusion therapies. Some health industry professionals point out that there little supporting evidence to the effectiveness of these treatments. As a result, they are not available in all areas and may not be covered by all health insurance plans. Speak with your doctor, but don’t be surprised if you end up having to drive to the next largest city.
