How to Have a Green Thanksgiving Day This Year

These days, almost everybody makes a conscious effort to go green in their day to day activities. With the amount of environmental pollution and awareness for a cleaner and greener environment, every little action taken by us towards that goes a long way. Here are some tips and tricks anybody can follow this Thanksgiving to go green-

Reuse decorations – In our household, we typically reuse the decorations from last year. This goes for Christmas as well. Instead of spending a lot of money in getting new decorations, reuse the old decorations. Look up websites such as Pinterest for inspirations to reuse your decorations in a new fashion.

Reduce waste – One of the four R’s of waste management, remember to reduce waste this year. That goes for any perishable food items as well non perishable items such as papers from decorations etc. Limit the amount of waste you generate during cooking the meals.

Buy local – This is a great way to support local farmers and organic farming. Encouraging local farming helps reduce pollution that occurs due to commercial farming and also less or no usage of pesticides and other pollutants and helps keep farming green.

Compost – If you have a garden at home, remember to compost any perishable waste. It produces manure for your garden and keeps the environment clean. There are numerous websites that shows how composting can be done. Even if you live in an apartment like us, you can still practice compost using worms in contained bags.

Conserve Water – Keep this in mind when you leave the water running! Try to save every drop of water and do not leave the faucet running unnecessarily. Use water conservatively during cooking.

Cleaners – Having a clean house for the Thanksgiving party is a must and when you go to clean, try to buy and use non toxic, environment friendly cleaners.

Avoid paper plates – I know everybody is tempted to use paper plates and cups to serve the meal in as this avoids the clean up after. But using lots of paper plates and plastic cups is not environment friendly. Try to stick with your sliver ware next time and save on paper.

Recycle the trash – Do not just dump all trash out. Take time to recycle it. Put cans and bottles and paper and other recyclable items separately so that it can be recycled effectively.

Go Organic – Using organic food for Thanksgiving is another way to go green. Organic food is grown without any pesticides or fertilizers or any growth hormones. The food is better for your health and for the environment.

Eco friendly party favors – Instead of buying party favors, try to make some using materials that you may have around your house. Look up Pinterest for inspirations. If kids are coming over, you can use baker’s clay to make some turkey models or any other models related to Thanksgiving. Add some non toxic paint and kids will have loads of fun.
