Free Crochet Pattern – Adult Earflap Stocking Cap
Crochet an adult earflap stocking cap with a Size I crochet hook and three ounces of heavy weight or chunky yarn. This particular yarn will add additional warmth on cold winter days. These particular stocking caps have provided my grandchildren and their adult parents with hours of comfortable play on snowy days.
Main Body
Row 1 – Chain two stitches. Turn and single crochet eight stitches in the second chain from the hook. Slipstitch the row of stitches together in this row and each row hereafter.
Row 2 – Chain one stitch. Complete two single crochet stitches in the same stitch as the slipstitch and in each stitch around for a total of 16 stitches.
Row 3 – Chain one stitch. Single crochet in the same stitch as the slipstitch. Complete two single crochet stitches in the next stitch and a single in the following – repeat this pattern around for a total of 24 stitches.
Row 4 – Chain one stitch. Single crochet in the same stitch as the slipstitch and in the next stitch. Complete two single crochet stitches in the next stitch and one single crochet in the following two stitches – repeat this pattern around for a total of 32 stitches.
Row 5 – Chain one stitch. Single crochet in the same stitch as the slipstitch and in each stitch around.
Row 6 – Chain one stitch. Single crochet in the same stitch as the slipstitch and the next two stitches. Complete two single crochet stitches in the next stitch and one single crochet in the next three stitches – repeat this pattern around for a total of 40 stitches.
Row 7 – Repeat Row 5.
Row 8 – Chain one stitch. Single crochet in the same stitch as the slipstitch and the next three stitches. Complete two single crochet stitches in the next stitch and one in the next four stitches – repeat this pattern around for a total of 48 stitches.
Row 9 – Repeat Row 5. For child’s at – Repeat Row 5 from Row 9 to 21. Finish off after last stitch.
Row 10 – only used for adult size earflap. Chain one stitch. Single crochet in the same stitch as the slipstitch and the next four stitches. Complete two single crochet stitches in the next stitch and in the next five stitches repeat this pattern around for a total of 52 stitches.
Row 10 – 23 – Repeat Row 5 for adult hat. Finish off after last stitch.
Ear Flaps
Adult earflap cap – Chain one stitch. Count seven stitches from the finished stitch in the last row. Attach the yarn and single crochet in the next 12 for a child’s hat and the next 13 for an adults. Chain one stitch. Turn. Single crochet the first stitch together then single crochet across the row. Turn and repeat until three stitches are left. Single crochet the last three stitches together and finish off.
Tie
Cut fourteen pieces of yarn two feet long. Divide the bundle into two bundles of seven. Fold one bundle in half matching the ends. Attach the loop to the point of the flap. Divide the bundle of 14 strands into two groups of 5 and one group of four. Braid the length together. Tie the end and cut the tails to the same length.
