A Letter to My Daughter

Dearest Daughter of mine,

There are a few things that I want to share with you on your one month birthday. The first, and most important, is that I love you and I will always love you no matter what. You are my daughter. I made you. And in a way, you made me. My body nourished you while you were growing in my uterus and my body continues to nourish you through my breast milk. And in return, you nourish my soul. When you lay your head on my chest and I wrap my arms around you, I feel complete.

Second, please do as I say and not as I do. Learn from my mistakes so that I don’t have to watch you go through the pain that I went through. Be strong, little one. Be stronger than me. And remember, you are not a princess, you are a queen.

Third, enjoy the hell out of life but be smart. I had my rebel rousing days, drinking and being stupid (what’s a class C misdemeanor on your record other than being an awesome story?). By all means, go out and have fun, create your own stories, but please be smart about it. Don’t do anything that’s irreversible. And remember, no matter where you find yourself, I will always be just a phone call away.

Fourth, make your own decisions. Be yourself. Live life for no one else but you. Make yourself happy before all others. Love yourself. No matter what hurtful things the world throws at you, be proud of who you are. And if you ever start to stumble, remember, I’m here for you, to help pick you up and set you back on your feet. The world is a cruel place, but you don’t have to face it alone, for I’ll always be by your side.

Fifth, (this one’s a hodge podge), love animals, travel, read, go outside, play, be kind to others, respect nature, smile every day, have an open mind and an open heart, don’t ever let anyone change you, eat good food, get your hands dirty, stop and smell the roses (yes, seriously), and be a good person. And if you choose not to do those things, it’s okay, I’ll still love you.

Sixth, last but not least, never ever turn your back on who you are. Be true, my daughter. Be true.

Love,
Momma
