Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms and Treatment

Magnesium is a required element in our bodies. It is necessary for normal electrical conduction in the heart. A deficiency of magnesium in the body may reduce relaxation of the heart and cause diastolic hypertension. A magnesium deficiency can increase the contraction of arterial muscles and even cause artery spasms which can lead to heart attack. Seriously abnormal heart rhythms can also result from the lack of magnesium in the body.

Magnesium contributes a lot to the proper functioning of the body. It is required for digestion, nerve impulses, cardiac electrical conduction, muscle function, hormonal balance and more. Magnesium also helps to dissolve large deposits of calcium in our bodies.

Good heart health begins with having the proper amounts of magnesium in our systems. Medications such as diuretics can cause a serious depletion of magnesium and increase risks to the heart.

Low magnesium can mimic other illnesses and provide similar symptoms such as anxiety, asthma, blood clots, bowel problems, cystitis, depression, diabetes, and fatigue. And that’s just the tip of the ice berg. It can also be a contributing factor in hypertension, insomnia, kidney problems, migraines, osteoporosis and tooth decay.

One of the most accurate tests for magnesium levels is the blood ionized magnesium test where ion-selective electrodes are used to measure the levels of magnesium ions in the blood. Treatment is simple: magnesium supplements. Since magnesium intake in large quantities can cause diarrhea and other side effects, it’s recommended that the daily amount allowed be taken in stages during the day, rather than all at once.

People who suffer from kidney problems should not increase magnesium levels since the kidneys, when not functioning properly, cannot clear the magnesium. Those with slow heart rates should also avoid the supplements since magnesium relaxes the heart and slow heart rates. Existing bowel problems is another consideration when taking magnesium supplements.

Talk to your doctor if you have symptoms suggesting your magnesium level could be low. Tests can give your physician a better idea of your magnesium level and whether or not you should begin a magnesium intake regimen. Do not begin the regimen on your own since magnesium can cause side effects that may harm you, if taken in the wrong dosages.
