Delta Force Xtreme

While this game may be a remake of the other earlier games by Novalogic of Delta Force fame, it is still a great first person shooter and fun to play. The game is just a remake of the earlier versions of the games namesake but that didn’t stop the company from changing things radically and adding in some new features. The game is a remake as it has not introduced new elements of gameplay or new technology for the game engine. It is basically the same as their earlier games, just with new levels and different things like new vehicles.

Delta Force Xtreme is a regular first person shooter without all the added frills and special features that many game companies are trying for these days. The only real difference from the earlier Delta Force games is some of the vehicles you get to ride on and drive. Other than that the game is pretty much the same, you are part of elite Delta Force and you have different missions to accomplish, which are relatively the same, kill the bad guys and not get killed. This is not all that difficult but the main part of the game is that it is fun. The graphics are good but not fantastic but the game is very steady. Very little glitching could be found and I like that in a game.

The requirements are pretty low, today it’s not uncommon to see these about double for a FPS game but they kept them low to appeal to a wider audience and to keep the price down.

Minimum System Requirements
Processor Pentium III 1.2 Ghz or equivalent
RAM 512 MB
Video 32 MB
Disk Drive 2.1 GB

The single player part of the game has three different areas of operation and you can switch back and forth to change the flavor of the game play. Each area is very different from the other and gives different challenges to the game. The single player missions are not all that difficult as the AI in the game is not very advanced but then again it is fun, shooting and blowing up anything in your way as you go from way point to way point is the whole of the game. The single player missions are not tough but you can get through them quickly. If you get really bored with that though you can use the mission editor and change the game a bit to make it more difficult.

There are a variety of weapons to choose from and you can take along your favorite explosive most of the time, although a few of the missions strip you down to a required weapon or explosive. The objectives are pretty clear and you will not have a hard time finding your way to them. The way points are clearly marked on your small indicator and destroying the things set in your way like helicopters and drug caches is fun. Some of the harder parts of the game are when you have others in the game to deal with like the AI on your team. I found it easier to stay away from my guys and work alone, they mainly get in your way while your trying to do what you want to. But the game works well and has very few problems.

One aspect of the game that NovaLogic seems to be trying to get more involved in is with vehicles, and this one is no different. I really like the motorcycles you can ride on in some of the missions, you can run them all out and have to avoid the land mines and shooters trying to get you. Then you have the dune buggies that you can drive on some missions and your the gunner on others, it’s fun to try and wipe out all the bad guys trying to stop you. It can get frustrating and that is one of the fun parts when you have to kill a lot of the bad guys on the dune buggy just to get to the next part of your mission. They have the couple of different kinds of helicopters in some of the missions which was fun, just like in their other games. The Black hawk and some smaller chopper where your on the skid seats.

I had bought all the Delta Force games up to this one and was unsurprised about this one, it is a good game though. A pretty straight forward first person shooter and fun in it’s own way. The game comes with a mission editor and you can download the tools you need to use it from the web, just visit the Xtreme site at Novalogic for a list of fan sites that have all kinds of tutorials, programs and help for the game, editing missions, creating your own or any other parts of the game you might need help with. http://www.novalogic.com/corp_fansites.asp

One whole aspect of this game that makes the game worthwhile is the multi player on NovaWorld. https://www.novaworld.com/NWCommunities/Default.aspx
The multi player games are real fun and they are easy and very uncomplicated to get into and join. I found some other games had a lot of complicated set up and settings to deal with on your computer to join Internet game play but they have made it very simple and quick to join in on the fun. Some of the games you will have to have certain things like anti cheating programs running in order to join but they are for everyones benefit and are easy to use. They are pretty picky about cheaters on some of these sites and it is no wonder. I found it pretty annoying when I first started playing multi player a few years ago and found out some people would use glitches in the game to hide and kill everyone else who just wanted to have fun.

One particular incident that I remember well is a map that had a pipe running along the ceiling, anyone who wanted to could jump onto the pipe and be in the ceiling, yet they could see down and kill anyone who walked or ran by. Many others were annoyed at the ones who would do this sort of thing and it has gave rise to all the anti cheating and banning of certain players from these sites. I appreciate the hard work some of the people who have made these anti cheating programs and the other free programs for editing and using my own levels that I can make.

The game has many different types of multi player games such as death match, cooperative play and capture the flag but also has tried to make new types of play available. Advance & Secure and Search & Destroy are new types of games they have come out with and add new fun to the multi player area of the game. They are both like there names, in one you advance into the enemy and secure their position and must stay there and defend it. The other you search out a particular objective being held by the other team and try to destroy it while the other team tries to defend it. It is all fun and a real different type of game than the single player AI controlled one. The other players you are playing against are smart and know the game well, all the things that make the multi player part fun.

Delta Force Xtreme is a really fun game even though it is not spectacular in any way. The graphics are great and the game play is good. It is not much of a new game as Novalogic really just made new levels and added some things in like different vehicles to play with. The single player is fun to play and somewhat of a challenge, but the multi player is real fun and a great time. It is definitely a challenge to play against others like yourself who enjoy a good first person shooter.

For the price of the game new, $20, it’s a pretty good game, you can probably get it for less than that though. I paid $5 for mine, and you can probably get it for around that now. It is a great game and really fun to play.
