Residential Program Awarded Grant for Housing

Before a Sept. 13th groundbreaking the Samaritan House in Fort Worth, TX was awarded a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

The award in excess of $900,000 is to support its Genesis Project housing program for HIV and AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) patients living at Samaritan House. The grant is a three-year award.

“We could not have asked for a better moment,” said Steve Dutton, director of the facility.

The award, part of HUD’s Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS (HOPWA) program, reflects an increase of approximately 20 percent over the previous contract.

The September groundbreaking of the new residential facilities for the Samaritan House is part of a development called the Villages at Samaritan House. Residents participating in the Genesis project will have the choice of living in the new Villages housing as well as in other apartments throughout the community.

“This never would have happened without such widespread community interest,” said Dutton.

The Samaritan House is located at 929 Hemphill Street.

Ben & Jerry’s recently treated the staff and patients with a complimentary ice cream
feast to beat the heat. They just opened up another store at 6115 Camp Bowie Boulevard also in Fort Worth.

More than a year ago 277 cane chairs which would otherwise be thrown away were donated to the Samaritan House by a local museum. The chairs suffered from years of neglect, replaced by more durable chairs for museum purposes. A local contractor, expert in repairing cane furniture, came in to train interested Samaritan House residents in the caning process. The cane chair project is the first time the facility and its residents have joined forces in such an economic endeavor.

A number of plans for selling the chairs have been discussed, from a retail space to websites and intermediate vendors.

To make an appointment to see the chairs or order them directly through Samaritan House call Rosie at 817-566-0120 #160.

Even though Samaritan House has maximized its resources through government funding, only two-thirds of their budget is supplied by federal, state, and local grants.
The facility has a Seeds of Hope Program which is a recurring donation that allows you to give on a regular basis without the hassles.
