How to Protect Yourself in a Thunderstorm

Thunderstorms are heavy rains accompanied by hails, lightning and thunder. Severe form of thunderstorms is capable of giving rise to tornadoes. They occur mostly in summers. Volcanic eruptions can also be a reason of thunderstorms. A thunderstorm poses threat to life and property. There are other names for a thunderstorm too e.g. lightning storm, thundershower etc. They are also called electric storms because during thunderstorms, there is a likely chance of getting hit by lightning. They usually occur in late afternoons and are most common in tropic places. Our step by step guide has some tips you should follow during a thunderstorm.

    Find a shelter:

    As soon as the warning approaches, it is very important to seek a protective shelter. Avoid shelter of trees and sheds. If you are outside, look for a safe cover as soon as possible and keep away from electric poles. Don’t stay in open space and grounds. If you don’t find any shelter, make sure minimum portion of your limbs get in contact with the ground.

    If you are in a car:

    Don’t touch the car glass or any metal. Keep windows closed and turn on the radio stay updated. If lightning strikes your car, it’ll only be around the car and will not affect you. It uses the car body as a cage to transmit to the ground leaving the interiors safe. So don’t worry.

    Disconnect all electrical appliances:

    If you are at home, make sure that you don’t use the electrical appliances like phone, iron etc and cut off electricity supply. Turn off the lights.  Stay away from windows and doors.

    Avoid water usage:

    Don’t take a bath. Keep your body especially the feet dry. If you are swimming, get out of the pool immediately. Electricity has a chance to travel through the metals and find their way into the water.

    Remove metallic objects from your body:

    Metals conduct electricity. Make sure to remove all metallic objects from your body. For example, watches, cell phones, jewelry, head/ear phones, metallic buckles on shoes, belts etc.
