Things to See and Do in Acapulco

The main attraction in Acapulco is the beautiful beaches where surf and sun is only part of the fun. Caleta Beach, one of the most popular in Acapulco, is great for families and kids. One problem with this beach is that vendors feel free to approach swimmers and sunbathers at any time, causing an almost constant interruption. Still, the beach is friendly and roomy.

Icacos Beach, in front of La Palapa Hotel, is loved by many teens on spring break. Crowded and alive, the beach is perfect for parasailing and swimming. Condesa Beach, at the center of Acapulco Bay, is popular with locals and tourists alike. Again, expect to see many vendors approach you during your time here.

Puerto Marques is located along the route to the airport and features calm waves and plenty of sunshine. The area is picturesque and serene. Revolcadero Beach, near the Princess Hotel and airport is fairly private as beaches go. If privacy and less traffic is your wish, this is the perfect spot. Pie de la Cuesta is where many visitors go to see the beautiful Mexican sunset. The waves can be treacherous so this is not an ideal spot for swimming. Great restaurants surround this beach which is less busy than some other beaches.

La Bonfil has great waves for surfing but swimming is a little dangerous with the giant waves. Located between Puerto Marques and Revolcadero Beach, the vendors are less obvious and the beach quite peaceful. Hornos Beach is close to the center of town and has calm waves for swimming.

Besides the beaches one of the most well-known attractions in Acapulco is the Cliff Divers. Watch the divers perform some awesome stunts at La Quebrada and enjoy dinner and drinks. Fort San Diego is also well known, by locals and tourists, for the interesting exhibits the museum features. This is only one of the museums and historical landmarks featured on the Historical Tour. Zocalo is the main public square and center of the original part of Acapulco. Sundays are the best days for visiting, where you’ll find plenty of places to eat and shop.

Thrilling things to do in Acapulco include bungee jumping in La Condesa, parasailing at Condesa Beach, and the skycoatster – a giant swing located on the beach.

But if the view and countryside is what you’re really searching for you’ll love Barra de Coyuca where you can watch the sun set at the point where the bay meets the lagoon. This is a romantic place and an adventurous travel destination. Las Brisas features many of the best restaurants and nightclubs in the area. At the top of the mountain there is a gigantic cross at the Chapel of Peace.

Cici is a water park that is fun for the whole family. Located along the Costera near Costa Azul, next to Planet Hollywood and the Hard Rock Caf©, the kids can even swim with the dolphins. Not too far away is the El Castillo de Los Moyis, a water park in Pie de la Cuesta. Along with the water park are restaurants and beautiful sunset-viewing points.

There are many tours cruising the city and most are reasonably priced. The Historical Tour is one of the best and most popular and will give you a nice introduction to the area. Or visit the Acapulco Convention Center upon arrival and check their calendar for special events and shows. One of the special events is a monthly concert from the Acapulco Philharmonic Orchestra. Arrive about an hour early and you can get free tickets and meet the conductor.

The Bullfights are another great attraction for some, but not appropriate for others. From November through March you can witness the bullfights – but children may not appreciate the gore and violence.

The Acapulco Fair, held at the Convention Center during Christmas and New Year features rides, games, eateries and shopping. The Acafest is an annual musical festival where thousands come to enjoy music and more, usually in May.

The Mexican Open Tennis Tournament is hosted at the Princess Hotel in March of every year. Or, get free entry into the international air event of the Acapulco Air Show, performed by civil and military professional pilots over Acapulco Bay. This event is usually held in October or November.

Spring Break is a time when Acapulco is buzzing with plenty of teens and young adults. If traveling during this time, be aware that beaches will be crowded, nightclubs are booming and reservations to just about any event is a must.
