A Look at the Mormon Tabernacle Choir

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is one of the most recognizable icons of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It frequently tours the world, and has been recognized as one of the elite choral organizations in the world. Its visits to countries outside the United States often result in nearly full houses. Entrance into the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is difficult, and rehearsals and touring can be time-consuming. But the work pays off for those who are members of the choir – they feel they are performing a valuable missionary service for their church and for to praise God.

The 360 men and women who make up the Mormon Tabernacle Choir are not paid for their service. It is considered a labor of love. It has been so since August 1847, when the choir was officially formed one month after the first Latter-day Saints entered the Salt Lake valley after fleeing persecution in the East. Music has always been part of the Mormon tradition; the prophet Joseph Smith’s wife, Emma, compiled the first LDS hymnbook in 1836 for publication. Even as they traveled across the plains, the pioneers sang songs and made music to praise God and lighten their burdens.

Tryouts are long and grueling, and musical competence and faithful adherence to the tenets of Mormonism are requirements. Many people outside the religion may have trouble believing that there are many more who try out for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir than can possibly make it. Once in the choir, rehearsals are at least twice a week and there is a steady stream of engagements. There is a great deal of dedication required from those who want to sing in the choir, including paying a portion of the costs of going on tour, whether it is an American tour or one in another part of the world (European tours are regular).

But all the hard work pays off. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir is widely lauded for its musical accomplishments. Its rendition of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” won a Grammy, and the choir has five gold records, and even a platinum record. The choir has been invited to perform at various performances, including on the National Mall, saluting America. Additionally, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has appeared at five presidential inaugurations, with the New York Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, and other renowned music-makers. No wonder Ronald Reagan referred to the choir as “America’s Choir.”
