Helping Your Child With Homework

School work is tough these days, and children are getting more and more work sent home with them. It is very important to get your child into good studying habits so they can be more likely to succeed in school. These good habits will not only prove better grades for your child, but also higher self esteem for your child as they succeed in school.

When your child gets home from school ask them how their day was and what the homework load is like for that evening. Offer them a healthy snack and a quiet atmosphere where they can complete their work. It is important to be clear of any distractions such as the phone, television, or even siblings wanting them to play. Playing music at a low volume can be helpful if your child proves to work more diligently with a subtle background noise.

You should keep in mind that in order for your child to do well with their studies, it is part of your parental responsibility to support them with their schoolwork. Look through their planner with them and see what tests they need to prepare for, reports they have coming up and what assignments are due for the following week.

If the school your child attends does not provide a planner for your child it would be a helpful study tool for them. This way they can record all upcoming assignments.

While your child is completing their assignments you should check in and see if they’re struggling. Showing interest in what your child is learning could help them when they need help on an assignment. Having a teacher phone number, or tutor available will also help if the assignments are difficult for your child. Many schools are now offering evening sessions where parents can come in and learn the curriculum their child is going to learn that semester. This helps parents refresh their memory on the studies their child will now be learning.

Working this closely with your child will not only improve grades, but parent child relationships as well.
