Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Will the Mighty Morphin Power Ranger fad ever die? Apparently not anytime soon. From the looks of all the Power Ranger stuff you can still find-from action figures, gloves, games, Power Rangers on bikes and of course, the incredibly popular costumes-it seems those intrepid teenage superheroes from the 90s will be sticking around for a while longer.

Although the Power Ranger show began as a classic sci-fi action series on television, it was a huge hit that morphed into one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons of the 90s. In cities all across America, costumed kids could be heard singing the theme song, which basically consisted of chanting “GO GO POWER RANGERS” over and over.

The Power Rangers were “Morphinomenal”

Sure, the Mighty Morphin Power Ranger show was really bad, but in a good way. I mean, how could you not love the cheesy special effects, the weird music, monster costumes that looked like they came from the storehouse of a B-movie horror flick, and teens prancing around in crayola-colored racing uniforms? It that wasn’t enough to hook you into the Power Ranger show, then how about that really awful dialog, like this for example:

Jason: Back off, fang-face!
Zack: The good guys are here!
Billy: Get off our planet!
Trini: ‘Cause we’re the Power Rangers!
Kimberly: And we’re not backing down!

Mighty Morphin Power Ranger: not just for kids

It goes without saying that boys and girls aged 2 and up were the biggest fans of the show, and the primary target for mass marketing of all that Power Ranger merchandise. But strangely enough, there are plenty of adults willing to admit they liked the show, too. In fact, Ranger talk still abounds on the internet, with daily postings on several different fan newsgroups.

Or maybe, it’s merely the same teens who grew up watching the show and haven’t found a replacement fad fix yet? At any rate, complete costumes for both kids and adults can be found on the web as well as at discount retail stores. They come in lots of colors, including blue, red, black, white, silver and yellow.

Plan a Power Ranger Birthday Bash

What child wouldn’t love to feel like a superhero on their special day? There’s a huge assortment of Mighty Morphin Power Ranger party goods available on the internet. You can send out Power Ranger invitations, decorate the house with balloons and streamers and serve the birthday cake on colorful Ranger plates. When the party’s over, kids can write their thank you notes on Power Ranger stationery. To make the party decorations more affordable, some sites even offer package deals at special prices.

Mighty Morphin Power Ranger History and Trivia

The original Power Ranger show debuted in Japan in 1975 as “Dinosaur Task Force Zyuranger.” The show was repackaged for U.S. audiences and in August of 1993 “The Mighty Morphin Power Ranger” television show debuted on the Fox Network.

The series took place in the fictional California town of Angel Grove, where five good-natured teens were given superhero powers to battle the world-dominating plots of an evil empress and her endless supply of monsters. It became an instant success and was soon followed by Power Ranger action figures and other toys, books, and a feature-length film, Mighty Morphin Power Ranger: The Movie, in 1995.

By the end of the decade, it became clear the Power Ranger appeal was destined to be a lasting property. According to Nielson, the Power Rangers were “the Most Popular Kids Show of the 1990s.” What’s more, they had a surge in popularity at the end of the decade, and the Mighty Morphin Power Ranger figures were rated the “Best Selling Action Toy” for the year 2000, ahead of Pokemon, Star Wars, Transformers and GI Joe.

Go, Go Power Ranger!
